Sorority "Walks it Out" for mental illness

Independent-Messenger - 6/26/2018

Gamma Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. sponsored a "Walk It Out" in the support of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

The walk was held June, 2 at the Greensville County High School track. In spite of the hot temperature, the Honorable Mary Person, mayor of Emporia, was among the participants who supported this event.

Participants traveled from as far as Chesterfield, and Roanoke Rapids, N.C. for this wonderful cause. Our goal was to provide awareness, fight stigma, and encourage understanding. According to a NAMI fact sheet, mental health conditions affect all of us. In fact, one in four people have some sort of mental health condition.

If you or someone you know is struggling, you are not alone.

There are many supports, services and treatment options that may help. You can contact the NAMI HelpLine at 800-950- 6264 for a referral.
