Hastings man placed on mental health hold again after screwdriver stabbing

The Grand Island Independent - 3/21/2017

HASTINGS - A 39-year-old Hastings man is on a mental health hold after he stabbed another man in the nose with a screwdriver, Hastings police said.

Sgt. Brian Hessler said a fight broke out Sunday night in the 200 block of East Seventh Street.

The man broke into his estranged wife's house, which used to be his house. Hessler said the estranged woman was living with another man and children. The estranged man, Hessler said, fought the male resident and stabbed him in the nose with a screwdriver. Hessler said the assault seemed like an all-out fight with punches thrown.

The estranged husband was first arrested for burglary and second degree assault on Monday, but was then taken to the hospital and placed on a mental health hold. The mental health hold is a civil matter and the man will go before an Adams County Mental Health Board to determine if he needs treatment. Hessler didn't release the man's name because of the mental health hold.

However, Hessler said the man is the same individual who was placed on a mental health hold Feb. 22. The man was placed on a hold then because he fired gunshots inside a residence, which went through a house wall. No one was injured in that event, but two family members were at the residence during the firing.
